Well-attended, the proceeds will go towards helping buy the medications of the indigent patients of PGH. It was also a double celebration – first, to celebrate the FPGH President’s birthday and secondly, it was an occasion to rejoice at the distinction award received by the FPGH from the Board of the Philippine General Hospital.
Christmas Gift-Giving
Every year, the Friends of PGH brings cheers to around 200-300 indigent patients at the different wards of PGH. This year, the gift giving focused on the children's wards of the Philippine General Hospital. Most of the children who received the Christmas goodies were sick with cancer and pneumonia. It was heart-breaking to see these infants and children so ill at such an early age. Apart from the Pediatric Wards, the members also visited two more wards to bring Christmas cheers to ill adults.

Expanding FPGH Outreach Programme
The June monthly meeting of the Friends of PGH discussed the progress of their activities and proposed and approved additional outreach programmes apart from the financial support given to the indigent patients of PGH to buy their medicines and lab tests. Around three activities were added to the programme, comprising of personalized visits and interactions with the indigent patients; feeding programme; toys, educational materials and old clothes distribution; and the traditional Christmas gift-giving every December.
The meeting also planned a survey to assess the new needs and requirements of the various wards and departments of PGH to aid FPGH in drawing up new services and support for those wards which are overlooked and neglected. The results of the survey will help identify new activities that the FPGH will undertake for the rest of the year.
FPGH Celebrates its 32nd Anniversary
The Friends of PGH celebrated its 32nd Founding Anniversary at the Manila Golf Club with a mass, lunch and presentations by Dr. Gerardo Legaspi and Dr. Dominga Padilla. Dr. Gerardo Legaspi, the current Director of the Philippine General Hospital made a presentation to update the Friends of PGH members on the state of the PGH, highlighting its achievements and plans for the future. Dr. Dominga Padilla, the founder and moving force behind the Eye Bank Foundation of the Philippines talked about how the Foundation was established, its objectives, work, and successes in reaching beneficiaries all over the Philippines. This pivotal work, according to Dr. Padilla, changed the landscape of ophthalmology in the Philippines by making corneal transplantation accessible and available to people from all walks of life, even to the marginalized around the country, thereby bringing the precious gift of hope through restored vision to thousands. These presentations have helped the Friends of PGH identify new avenues of support for the PGH and the Eye Bank Foundation of the Philippines.
