The Friends of PGH (FPGH) was launched on October 17, 1984 by Lulu Teodoro, supported by its founding members, Baby Caparas, Alice Katigbak, Bon Lorenzo, Bea Tan, Ellen Padilla and Darle Zamuco. They were participants of protests marches during martial law after Ninoy Aquino's assassination. To translate their civic concerns into less confrontational and more concrete actions, the group formed the FPGH to help the indigent patients at PGH to get more decent medical services. The FPGH decided to focus their assistance to the patients of the Emergency Room Admitting Section (ERAS) which receives about a thousand patients daily.
As its initial fund-raiser, a "lugawan" was organized in February 1985 at the Makati Sports Club participated by celebrities like Pilita Corrales, Celeste Legaspi, Tessie Tomas, Bert Nievera, Subas Herrera and Noel Trinidad who donated their talents to the event. This raised a sizeable amount which helped push the group's goals of maintaining cleanliness at ERAS premises and supply of basic medical needs such as disposable syringes, IV fluids, antibiotics, ambu-bags, oxygen gauges, blood pressure apparatuses and the like. This was followed by steady increase in membership and more fund-raising events through rummage sales, bazaars, bingo and concert socials.
After the FPGH was registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission as a non-stock and non-profit foundation, more donations poured in from domestic as well as foreign sources. In turn, the group donated bigger items to PGH such as wheel-chairs, hospital beds, and other supplies and equipment. Among its more substantial contributions were the laparatomy surgical instruments, cessium needles for gynecological cancer patients worth half a million pesos with counterpart help from U.S.-based doctors and Php99,000 donated to the PGH Blood Bank.
Today, the FPGH has been in existent for over two decades and it is still tirelessly and selflessly rallying its members to continue its support to the indigent patients of PGH.
